Flutter Entertainment is bringing its UK poker operations together under the PokerStars brand in a move aimed at enhancing player liquidity, enriching the gaming experience, and solidifying PokerStars as the group's main poker platform. This integration is set to begin on August 13 with the launch of PokerStars on Betfair, and the migration of Sky Bet and Paddy Power is expected to occur later in the year. Rather than maintaining separate poker systems for each brand, Flutter plans to unify them under a single network while keeping each brand's existing casino offerings intact.
The initial phase involves integrating PokerStars into Betfair, operating under the co-branded PokerStars on Betfair identity. Although the existing PokerStars UK platform will continue to function during this transition, Flutter aims to eventually migrate the platform, along with its customers and product experiences, into the Betfair Casino ecosystem.
This approach will similarly apply to Sky Bet and Paddy Power in subsequent phases. Ultimately, all three brands will share a connected liquidity pool that integrates with the broader PokerStars Network, which serves as Flutter's international poker framework. In online poker, liquidity is a major asset; a larger player base results in more active cash games, quicker seat availability, and larger tournament fields, which collectively enhance prize pools. By unifying its player pools, Flutter seeks to boost its competitive stance in the poker market.
This consolidation aligns with Flutter's broader strategy, which has already been adopted in other regions, such as the United States with FanDuel and Italy with Sisal and SNAI. Flutter asserts that concentrating players on a single network enables the company to enhance liquidity and provide a more consistent user experience across its brands.
Kim Daly, Managing Director of Betfair, expressed enthusiasm regarding the merger of these two storied brands into a cohesive gaming experience, highlighting the synergy between PokerStars and Betfair’s sportsbook and casino products that together create a comprehensive entertainment platform.
PokerStars joined Flutter’s portfolio following the acquisition of The Stars Group in 2020, a deal that significantly broadened Flutter’s reach in regulated online gaming markets. Established in 2001, PokerStars has grown to become one of the most recognized names in online poker. However, shifts in the industry have led to a fragmented competitive landscape due to increasing regulatory challenges that have disrupted liquidity across various markets.
Mike Woodbridge, Chief Commercial Officer at PokerStars, stated that this restructuring emphasizes PokerStars’ enduring strategic significance within Flutter’s portfolio. He remarked, "PokerStars is the most iconic brand in global poker. These changes ensure it remains a core strategic brand within Flutter's portfolio." Woodbridge also noted that shifting Flutter's player base onto a unified network aims to foster healthier player pools and promote greater engagement throughout the platform.
This transition is more than just a branding update; it represents a crucial operational shift. In poker, the scale of the network is essential for sustaining player retention and long-term profitability. By consolidating liquidity rather than maintaining separate player bases, Flutter is reinforcing PokerStars as the group's central poker hub, thereby simplifying its product offerings while enhancing the vital network effects necessary to thrive in a regulated online poker environment.
