BETBY has released an in-depth analysis that examines player behavior during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, highlighting that the tournament had long-lasting effects beyond just a temporary spike in betting activities. According to the findings, there was a notable acceleration in customer acquisition and engagement, providing operators with crucial insights into long-term player retention strategies.
The analysis, which draws on data from BETBY's global partner network, showed that traffic to betting platforms surged by 86.4%, and the number of active players rose by 84.8% compared to the month before the World Cup. However, these impressive numbers only scratch the surface of the potential impact the event had on player behavior.
One of the key insights revealed is that the World Cup streamlined the customer journey. The average time between a player's first and second bets decreased by 21.3%, indicating that the newly onboarded users transitioned to repeat customers much faster than typically seen in the market. This trend is significant for operators since repeat betting is a strong indicator of a player's long-term value. Therefore, the time following initial acquisition is critical for retention strategies rather than just for immediate monetization.
The report also highlighted which sportsbook features garnered the most engagement during the tournament. Bet Builder emerged as a leading feature, experiencing a turnover share increase of 422% and a bet share rise of 311%. Boosted Odds saw an uptick of 224% in turnover share and 216% in bet share, while Early Payout also recorded a remarkable growth of 252% and 179%, respectively. These findings indicate a broader trend where personalized and interactive betting products are starting to outperform traditional betting models during high-stakes sporting events.
A considerable portion of the report focused on BETBY's AI Labs, the company's artificial intelligence division that uses behavioral data to gain actionable insights. This platform analyzes anonymized customer signals—including player IDs, geography, language, currency, and betting history—to update player profiles in near real time. The insights from this analysis fuel recommendation engines and churn prediction models, thereby enabling operators to customize the betting experience for individual users.
Danil Emelyanov, Head of AI Labs at BETBY, remarked that much of the AI hype within the industry often falls short of delivering practical value. “We built AI Labs with a clear commercial purpose: to collect behavioral signals, analyze them intelligently, and deliver a genuinely personalized betting experience,” he said, emphasizing the importance of translating data into concrete business value.
According to BETBY, its AI-driven personalization engine dynamically reshapes sportsbook content based on user preferences, while tools like Churn Predictor and LTV Predictor assist operators in identifying when to intervene and how to allocate retention budgets. The results were clear: players exposed to AI-generated content and pre-built betting combinations made their 10th bet in an average of nine days, compared to 11 days for those without such features. Remarkably, 27.1% of those players stayed active after three months, almost doubling the 14.2% retention rate found among users lacking AI-driven personalization.
The report also revealed a shift in betting preferences as player engagement deepens. For users with fewer than ten lifetime bets, 21.74% of wagers focused on events involving their home country. However, once players placed more than ten bets, that figure dropped to 13.73%, indicating that seasoned bettors tend to explore a wider range of interests as their betting journeys evolve.
One of the key takeaways of the report is that retention strategies should be increasingly proactive. BETBY indicated that relying solely on post-event churn analysis is not sufficient during major tournaments, as player behavior can change rapidly. Indicators such as the elimination of a user's national team or growing gaps between betting sessions can signal potential disengagement before it occurs.
Bohdan Pustovoit, Head of Sports at Pokerdom, highlighted the divergent motivations between habitual bettors and those drawn in by major events. Many temporary customers view betting as a way to support their national team rather than as a path to ongoing betting habits.
BETBY's predictive models underscore the importance of early intervention. On the World Cup's opening day, the Churn Predictor indicated that 9% of active users were at the highest risk of abandoning the platform within the subsequent 30 days, with 90% of that group likely to churn without timely action. Simultaneously, the LTV Predictor was able to pinpoint players expected to generate over €10,000 in turnover with 93% predictive accuracy, allowing operators to target their retention budgets efficiently.
The findings from BETBY suggest that the impact of significant sporting events on commercial outcomes transcends mere acquisition metrics. While increased traffic and active player numbers are essential, the true competitive edge lies in recognizing which customers can evolve into long-term players and intervening before their engagement wanes. As customer acquisition costs escalate in regulated markets, the report echoes a growing consensus in the industry: the most successful operators will not just be those attracting the highest number of players during global events but those adept at transforming fleeting interest into lasting value.
