New York Sportsbooks Achieve $214.4M Revenue in July

New York's online sportsbooks recorded a gross gaming revenue (GGR) of $214.4 million in July, despite a decrease in betting volume compared to the previous month. Data from the New York State Gaming Commission reveals that the state's eight licensed operators accepted $1.88 billion in wagers, resulting in an 11.4% hold, one of the strongest revenue performances this year.
This situation highlights a crucial aspect of sports betting economics; operator profitability hinges not just on wagering volume but also on the hold percentage. Although July's betting handle fell from June's record, a significantly improved win rate compensated for the volume drop, leading to a notable revenue increase.

**Revenue Surges Amid Recovery of Operator Margins**
After reaching an all-time high handle of $2.25 billion in June, New York's betting market saw a decline in activity in July, with total wagers down 16.7%. Yet, revenue increased in contrast. Gross gaming revenue jumped 83.5%, rising from $116.8 million in June to $214.4 million, thanks to the significant recovery in sportsbook margins. Operators retained an 11.4% of wagers in July compared to just 5.19% the month before.

This discrepancy illustrates how monthly revenue can vary independently of betting activity, particularly when favorable outcomes for customers lead to lower operator hold in one period, followed by normalization in the next.

**Year-Over-Year Growth Remains Strong**
Despite the month-to-month slowdown, New York's sports betting market grew considerably on an annual basis. Wagering volume rose 34.3% compared to July 2022, with gross gaming revenue increasing by 37.8%. This indicates that both customer engagement and operator earnings are on a strong upward path.
Six out of eight licensed sportsbooks in the state reported higher revenue than in June, benefiting from the improved hold across the board.

**World Cup Boosts Seasonal Betting Activity**
The 2026 FIFA World Cup provided a notable boost to the summer betting landscape, which usually sees a slowdown following the NFL, NBA, and NHL seasons. Typically, Major League Baseball attracts betting in the summer; however, the World Cup introduced a high-volume international event, spurring additional activity in July.
This tournament also helped increase sportsbook margins, with favorable outcomes in three-way moneyline markets. For example, Spain's victory over Argentina in the final was one of several results that contributed to higher hold percentages for operators.

**FanDuel and DraftKings Maintain Their Dominance**
The competitive scene remained consistent, with DraftKings and FanDuel continuing to dominate New York's online betting market. DraftKings secured the highest betting handle in the state for the second consecutive July, processing $661.5 million in wagers. An 11% hold resulted in $72.9 million in gross gaming revenue.
Conversely, FanDuel posted the best financial performance despite processing slightly fewer bets. The operator accepted $651.2 million in wagers and achieved a 13.2% hold, resulting in $86.1 million in gross gaming revenue. This figure was nearly double what it reported in June and outpaced DraftKings in monthly earnings.

**Hold, Not Handle, Shaped July's Outcomes**
July demonstrated that sportsbook performance cannot be judged solely on betting volume. While handle remains a prominent metric in the industry, profitability ultimately relies on how effectively wagers translate into revenue. New York's recent figures show that even during months with lower betting activity, stronger pricing outcomes and beneficial sports results can significantly boost operator earnings. As the NFL season approaches, sportsbooks will aim to build on July's recovery in margins and sustain the record levels of customer engagement witnessed throughout the year.
