QuinnBet Settles for Over £609K Due to AML Failures

QuinnBet, an online betting platform, has agreed to pay £609,104 ($830,501) to the UK Gambling Commission after a review revealed significant shortcomings in its anti-money laundering and responsible gambling measures. This payment addresses issues identified from March to August 2023.

The settlement breakdown includes £193,118 going directly to the UK Gambling Commission, while the remainder will cover the investigation's costs. The proceeds from this settlement will be redirected to the UK Consolidated Fund.

Among the cited failures, one notable case involved a customer whose payslip reported an income of £2,000 per month but managed to deposit £9,000 in just four days. Another incident revealed a customer deposited £120,000 over three months without needing to verify the source of those funds. Additionally, due to software errors, approximately 200 clients unintentionally surpassed their betting limits.

The Commission criticized QuinnBet for lacking adequate systems to protect customers against irresponsible gambling. One alarming example highlighted by the Commission was a customer who placed around 4,800 bets in a single day and another 7,000 the next day without triggering any internal alerts.

John Pierce, the Director of Enforcement at the Gambling Commission, emphasized the dangers of ineffective monitoring systems, stating, "The serious consequences of relying on systems and controls that are unable to identify and respond to indicators of harm and financial crime quickly enough. We expect operators to ensure their safeguards are effective in practice to protect consumers and keep crime out of gambling."

This enforcement action follows the UK Gambling Commission's recent move against other operators, including a £150,000 fine imposed on Holland Park Leisure for failing to comply with mandatory self-exclusion measures. The ongoing scrutiny underscores the Commission's commitment to enforcing anti-money laundering protocols and promoting safer gambling practices within the UK's licensed gambling sector.
