QuinnBet, an online betting platform, has reached an agreement with the UK Gambling Commission, agreeing to pay a total of £609,104 ($830,501) following a review that identified multiple serious shortcomings in the company’s anti-money laundering (AML) and safe gambling protocols. This settlement addresses issues that occurred between March 2023 and August 2023.
Under the terms of the settlement, QuinnBet will remit £193,118 directly to the UK Gambling Commission, with the remainder of the payment covering investigation costs. Proceeds from the settlement will go to the UK Consolidated Fund.
The review highlighted several troubling incidents involving customers. For instance, one customer whose payslips indicated a monthly income of £2,000 managed to deposit £9,000 over just four days. Another notable instance involved a customer who deposited £120,000 within three months without needing to validate the source of these funds. Additionally, software errors permitted nearly 200 customers to exceed their betting limits unintentionally.
The Commission also concluded that QuinnBet lacked effective measures to protect its customers from irresponsible gambling behavior. In one highlighted case, a customer placed around 4,800 bets in a single day, followed by 7,000 bets the next day, without activating an internal warning system.
John Pierce, the Director of Enforcement at the Gambling Commission, commented on the situation, stating, "The serious consequences of relying on systems and controls that are unable to identify and respond to indicators of harm and financial crime quickly enough. We expect operators to ensure their safeguards are effective in practice to protect consumers and keep crime out of gambling."
Recently, the UK Gambling Commission has imposed actions against other operators, including a £150,000 fine on Holland Park Leisure for failing to participate in the mandatory multi-operator self-exclusion scheme. This enforcement action is part of the Commission's ongoing commitment to enhancing compliance with AML and safer gambling regulations within Britain’s licensed market.
