KSA Reports Increase in Gambling Sign-Ups at 18

The Dutch Gaming Authority (KSA) has revealed a significant surge in gambling among young people as they turn 18, with 11% of new accounts opened on the day of their birthday. This data has reignited discussions regarding the adequacy of gambling protections for young adults.

In analyzing 15,761 newly funded gambling accounts, the KSA found that 33% came from players aged 18 to 24. Among these, a striking 41% were created by individuals who had just turned 18, while 38% opened their accounts within a month of their birthday.

Casino games emerged as the preferred choice for young adult gamblers, with 72% selecting this option, compared to just 11% betting on sports. The average young adult engaged in gambling reported participating on four separate days during their first quarter of play, with an average stake of €111 per day.

Importantly, the KSA's research highlights that many young individuals are exposed to gambling well before reaching the legal age. A separate study focusing on 50 people aged 16 to 21 indicated that initial exposure to gambling typically occurs between ages 8 and 12, primarily through scratch cards, lotteries, and informal bets among family members.

As early as ages 12 to 14, gambling becomes associated with social interactions, often involving friends or participation in football pools. Some participants in the study pointed out that minors frequently access gambling accounts set up by older relatives to bypass age restrictions.

These findings arrive as there are calls to increase the minimum gambling age in the Netherlands from 18 to 24. Meryam Sümer, a member of the Christian Democratic Party, supports this proposal, while the KSA cautions that more stringent age restrictions could drive young individuals towards unregulated gambling sites.
