BETBY has unveiled a detailed report analyzing player behavior throughout the 2026 FIFA World Cup, highlighting that the tournament had effects that went beyond just a short-term increase in betting activity. The findings show a notable spike in customer acquisition and engagement, while offering operators critical insights into maintaining long-term player retention.
Data from BETBY’s global partner network revealed an 86.4% rise in platform traffic, and active players surged by 84.8% compared to the month before the tournament. However, the report emphasizes that these headline statistics only tell part of the story.
The World Cup appears to have expedited the player journey, compressing the time from a player’s first to second bet by 21.3%. This indicates that newly acquired users transitioned to repeat customers much faster than usually observed in the market. For operators, this is strategically significant, as repeat betting is a key indicator of long-term customer value, underscoring the importance of the period immediately following acquisition for retention.
BETBY’s analysis also assessed which sportsbook features attracted the most engagement during the event. The Bet Builder feature notably saw a 422% increase in turnover share and a 311% boost in bet share. Other features like Boosted Odds and Early Payout also experienced substantial gains, indicating that personalized and interactive betting options regularly outpace traditional wagering during significant sporting events.
The report dedicates a substantial section to BETBY's AI Labs, which specialize in transforming behavioral data into actionable insights. The AI platform analyzes anonymized customer signals such as player ID, geography, language, and betting habits to refine player profiles in near real time. This data underpins recommendation engines and churn prediction models, allowing operators to fine-tune the betting experience for individual users.
Danil Emelyanov, Head of AI Labs at BETBY, commented on the industry's AI landscape, noting that much of the enthusiasm surrounding AI often doesn’t align with practical outcomes. He mentioned that AI Labs was developed with a commercial focus to analyze and utilize behavioral signals for creating a personalized betting experience, emphasizing how this data can translate into tangible business value through enhanced predictions and customer segmentation.
The AI-driven personalization approach has shown measurable results. Players who benefitted from AI-generated content recommendations and pre-built betting combinations generally reached their tenth bet after an average of nine days, compared to eleven days for those who did not have access to these features. Significantly, 27.1% of these players remained active after three months, compared to 14.2% retention among those without AI-driven personalization.
The report highlights shifts in player preferences as they engage more with the platform. For users with fewer than ten lifetime bets, 21.74% of wagers were on events involving their home country, but that proportion dropped to 13.73% for those who had placed more than ten bets, indicating that experienced bettors are diversifying their interests as they become more familiar with the platform.
The report's most critical insight is the need for proactive retention strategies. BETBY cautions that relying on post-event churn analysis may not be effective during major tournaments, where player behavior changes rapidly. Indicators like the exit of a user’s national team from the tournament, prolonged periods between betting sessions, or decreased activity can signal declining engagement well before a player disengages completely.
Bohdan Pustovoit, Head of Sports at Pokerdom, emphasized the differences between regular bettors and those attracted by major events. He noted that for many event-driven customers, betting may simply be an extension of supporting their national team rather than the start of a lasting betting habit.
BETBY’s predictive models illustrate the advantages of addressing churn early. During the World Cup's opening day, the Churn Predictor tagged 9% of active users as highly likely to leave within 30 days, with a 90% likelihood of churn without intervention. Similarly, the LTV Predictor identified players expected to generate over €10,000 in turnover with 93% accuracy, allowing operators to direct retention efforts where they could yield the highest returns.
BETBY’s analysis suggests that the impact of major sporting events reaches far beyond just acquisition figures. While increased traffic and active users are significant, the true competitive edge lies in identifying customers most likely to become long-term players and taking action before their engagement dips. With customer acquisition costs rising in regulated markets, the report reinforces the notion that the most successful operators during global events will be those that excel at turning fleeting interest into sustainable lifetime value.
