The Star Sydney could potentially regain its casino license by the end of September, contingent on meeting specific conditions and ongoing regulatory requirements. The New South Wales Independent Casino Commission (NICC) has indicated that The Star will finalize its challenges when the appointed manager, Nick Weeks, completes his term. However, it appears likely that Weeks will remain involved in aspects of the process.
The Star has faced license suspension since October 2022 following the Bell Inquiry, which uncovered serious shortcomings in its anti-money laundering protocols, VIP management, and overall corporate governance. For the company to restore its license, it must adhere to rigorous regulatory standards and prove continued compliance. The NICC plans to undertake another review assessing The Star's suitability within the next 12 to 18 months.
Amidst these challenges, The Star is grappling with significant financial and regulatory pressures, reporting a loss of AU$307 million for fiscal year 2026. The company also faces a case from AUSTRAC, which could cost around AU$400 million due to alleged violations of anti-money laundering legislation. Additionally, in August, The Star was fined AU$500,000 due to incidents involving minors in gambling activities.
Even if the company regains control of its casino operations, it will still remain under the regulator’s close watch. The NICC is expected to revisit The Star's compliance with Section 31 of the Casino Control Act in the following 12 to 18 months. Currently, The Star Sydney is confronted with the significant challenge of reinstating its operational license.
