Fabio Macorin, the deputy secretary for the Secretariat of Prizes and Betting in Brazil, has been elected to the board of trustees of the International Association of Gaming Regulators (IAGR). With extensive experience in law enforcement and regulatory oversight, Macorin has played a crucial role in shaping Brazil's newly regulated betting market.
Tasked with implementing and enforcing Brazil's regulatory framework for betting, Macorin has been instrumental in supervising the market since he joined the Ministry of Finance in 2024. His responsibilities include monitoring licensed operators and addressing the illegal market while reinforcing measures to prevent money laundering and the financing of terrorism. He also collaborates with other government entities and private sector stakeholders to enhance these efforts.
IAGR President Ben Haden remarked on the significance of Macorin's role, stating, "Fabio’s appointment brings an important South American perspective to the IAGR board of trustees at a time when regulators worldwide are facing similar transnational challenges. Brazil has undergone an ambitious regulatory transformation in an extraordinarily short period, and his experience at the heart of this process will provide valuable insights to the regulators within our global community."
Before his role at the Ministry of Finance, Macorin spent 17 years with Brazil's Federal Police, where he concentrated on banking and financial fraud for a decade. This background has informed his approach to regulation, particularly in terms of anti-money laundering efforts and inter-agency cooperation.
Brazil's regulated betting market launched formally in 2025 and has become a focal point in the global gaming sector. As the SPA's undersecretary, Macorin contributed to initiatives aimed at curbing illegal operators and enhancing collaboration with financial institutions and telecommunications providers, as well as developing data-driven regulatory tools.
Expressing his sentiments about joining the IAGR board, Macorin commented, "Brazil learned a great deal from the experience of regulators worldwide while developing our own regulatory framework, and I view the IAGR as one of the most important forums for this exchange of knowledge. Although each jurisdiction has its own legal system, market characteristics and regulatory priorities, many of the challenges we face are increasingly global. Combatting the illegal market, preventing money laundering, protecting consumers and ensuring betting integrity require ever-greater cooperation among regulators from different countries."
Macorin is set to represent Brazil at the upcoming IAGR Annual Conference in Peru, scheduled for October 19-22, where global regulators and industry representatives will address new challenges and opportunities facing gaming and betting regulation.
IAGR Vice President Brian Krolicki expressed gratitude for Macorin's commitment to representing South America at a critical juncture for gaming regulation, highlighting his blend of expertise in law enforcement and regulatory matters.
