The Undersecretariat of Telecommunications (Subtel) in Chile has announced a ban on 42 foreign online gambling websites that lack official recognition from the country’s regulatory bodies. This action comes as a result of rulings from both the Supreme Court and the Santiago Appeals Court. Internet service providers, including Entel, Movistar, Claro, GTD, WOM, and VTR, are required to remove these illegal platforms from their services within 48 hours.
The specific domains to be blocked will be identified by the Superintendency of Casinos (SCJ), which oversees gambling operations in Chile. Subtel Undersecretary Romina Garrido emphasized the commitment to adhere to court rulings and regulatory guidelines. "As Subtel, we are strictly complying with the rulings of the courts and the regulatory framework, deploying an efficient and coordinated technical solution that protects people's digital security," she stated. Garrido added that telecommunications companies must act swiftly to restrict access to these online casino platforms operating unlawfully.
This measure is part of broader discussions regarding online gambling regulations in Chile. It follows a legal challenge initiated by Lotería de Concepción against the involved companies for failing to comply with existing laws. The Supreme Court ruled that illegal gambling activities should be curtailed without exception, and the Santiago Court of Appeals confirmed that blocking the DNS services of these websites is permissible to comply with the legal decision.
