The government of Sri Lanka has ordered telecommunications companies to block access to 24 gambling websites operating without proper licenses. This decision follows a request from the newly formed Gambling Regulatory Authority (GRA), as reported by local media.
Among the websites that have been blocked are several high-profile international betting platforms such as Bet365, Stake, Betway, 1xBet, Unibet, Betfair, and Dafabet. Other sites affected include 22Bet, Melbet, 1Win, BC.Game, Megapari, Pin-Up, Mostbet, Parimatch, Betwinner, Linebet, 4rabet, Rajabets, and DBBet.
Authorities noted that these sites were providing gambling services to residents of Sri Lanka without the necessary local approvals. While online gambling is not completely prohibited in the country, operators are required to obtain authorization in accordance with the local licensing framework. Engaging in gambling activities without a valid license could lead to penalties under Section 44 of the relevant regulations.
The government has issued a warning to consumers about the risks associated with betting on unauthorized offshore gambling websites and advised against depositing money with non-compliant operators. This blocking action marks a major enforcement move as Sri Lanka works to reform its gambling regulation system.
