Brazil's Gaming Revenue Surges to BRL6 Billion in H1 2026

The sports betting and online gaming sector in Brazil is experiencing significant growth. From January to May 2026, the country generated BRL5.89 billion ($1.18 billion) in betting revenue, up from BRL3.169 billion ($634 million) during the same period in 2025. This represents a remarkable increase of 85.88% year-over-year.

This surge highlights the sector's critical role in the economy, placing considerable responsibility on the government. With ongoing criticisms from the executive branch regarding betting sites, it is essential for policymakers to take this industry seriously.

Experts suggest that tax revenue could potentially double if clandestine websites were brought into the legal framework, or at least if illegal operations were effectively curtailed. This would promote the use of licensed betting platforms among consumers.

The data was shared by tax auditors Claudemir Malaquias and Marcelo Gomide during a presentation that included Revenue Secretary Robinson Barreirinhas. In 2025, Brazil accumulated BRL9.95 billion ($1.99 billion) in betting revenue, and with numbers from the first five months of 2026 already exceeding last year's total by 60%, the trend appears promising.

Looking ahead, if the current monthly revenue continues, Brazil could potentially surpass BRL14 billion ($2.8 billion) by year’s end. The excitement surrounding the World Cup is expected to further fuel this growth. From the start of the tournament until June 25, bettors have already transferred nearly BRL510 million ($102 million) to various betting platforms, according to data intelligence firm Klavi.

Klavi reports that the match against Scotland on June 24 alone saw over BRL25 million ($5 million) wagered, marking a 35% increase from the daily average prior to the World Cup's commencement. The average value of transactions among Brazilian bettors has also increased, rising from about BRL185 to BRL235 ($37-$47), which is a 24% boost. This analysis encompassed transactions from 1.2 million individuals across 187 licensed betting sites in Brazil.
