As the World Cup fades into memory, Europe’s top football leagues are gearing up to return for the new season this weekend, and the betting industry is preparing for an intensified competitive landscape.
A notable trend in sports betting has emerged: bettors are increasingly placing wagers on individual players rather than just teams. This evolution has given rise to micro-betting, enabling bettors to engage more intricately with matches, predicting not only final results but also specific in-game occurrences.
James Derbyshire, the sports director for the UK and Ireland at LeoVegas Group, notes that this shift signifies a deeper change in how customers interact with football betting. “Where we’ve been over the past 20, 30 years in football is really focused on team outcomes,” Derbyshire said. “And you can see now that the market is heavily shifting towards more player-based outcomes.” He emphasized that customers are seeking more personalized insights on how they believe games will unfold — from goals and corners to bookings and shots on target. This growth in micro-betting allows fans to enjoy a more diversified betting experience.
Data analytics play a crucial role in this transformation, with companies like Genius Sports at the forefront. Last year, Genius secured a landmark agreement with the European Leagues Association, which granted it exclusive rights to capture and distribute official betting data for 18 of its member leagues. Their GeniusIQ system enhances tactical analysis and fan engagement by deploying sophisticated AI technology that collects up to 10,000 data points from every player 200 times per second, offering a nuanced understanding of game dynamics.
James McKiernan, Genius’s Commercial Director, pointed out that this technology allows for more precise in-play betting. “At the moment, in-play bet delays exist where operators and their customers don’t want them,” he explained. Knowing when the ball is going out for a goal kick, for example, means that bets can be accepted without delay, improving the customer experience significantly.
The significance of official league data cannot be overstated. Chris Gerstle, the director of commercial and business development at European Leagues, described this data as “absolutely critical” for maintaining integrity and accuracy in increasingly detailed betting products. He underscored that robust partnerships with data collection firms are essential to have reliable and traceable data, which is particularly important as micro-betting gains traction.
While the advancement in data and the burgeoning interest in micro-betting have expanded the range of available betting options, Derbyshire noted that LeoVegas has returned to focusing on the relevance of markets. “Maybe four or five years ago, it was about how many markets that we have on the site,” he shared. “And actually, now we’re thinking more along the lines of which are the markets that are most relevant to the stories that customers want to be engaged with from a football perspective.”
This shift aims to ensure that bettors are presented with options that are timely and relevant. “Everybody is very early on in the development of that, but you can definitely see that it’s more around the narrative of the game,” Derbyshire added, suggesting a future where betting opportunities are crafted around anticipated game developments rather than simply providing a multitude of options.
As micro-betting popularity grows, so too do integrity concerns associated with the potential for manipulation of player-specific bets. Gerstle reiterated the necessity of working alongside trustworthy partners to mitigate these risks: “We aim to promote integrity by working with trusted partners who have built-in safeguards as part of their operations based around official league data.”
Genius has a dedicated team focused on maintaining integrity, creating tools to identify potential instances of spot-fixing and providing support for leagues to tackle these issues promptly.
The blurred lines between watching and betting are becoming clearer with innovations like Genius’s BetVision, designed to integrate streaming and betting into a seamless experience. McKiernan emphasized this shift, asserting that BetVision allows users to engage with the sport by monitoring stats and placing bets concurrently without exiting the viewing experience.
Additionally, operators are increasingly adopting bet builders, allowing customers to combine different outcomes into a single wager. Derbyshire acknowledged the need for operators to enhance the discoverability and combinability of markets, facilitating a more user-friendly betting experience.
As anticipation builds for the upcoming season, it appears that the next evolution of football betting will be significantly shaped by how companies utilize data and technology to create enriching experiences for fans.
