Fabio Macorin, who serves as the deputy secretary of the Secretariat of Prizes and Betting (SPA) in Brazil, has been appointed to the board of trustees of the International Association of Gaming Regulators (IAGR). Macorin brings a wealth of experience in areas such as law enforcement, financial crime prevention, regulatory oversight, and the development of Brazil's newly regulated betting market.
In his role at the SPA, Macorin plays a crucial role in enforcing Brazil's regulatory framework for betting. Since joining the Ministry of Finance in 2024, he has been instrumental in the establishment of this framework, focusing on monitoring authorized operators, tackling the illegal betting market, and enhancing controls against money laundering and terrorism financing. His efforts also involve coordinating enforcement initiatives alongside government agencies and private sector entities.
IAGR President Ben Haden emphasized the significance of Macorin's appointment, stating, "Fabio’s appointment brings an important South American perspective to the IAGR board of trustees at a time when regulators worldwide are facing similar transnational challenges. Brazil has undergone an ambitious regulatory transformation in an extraordinarily short period, and his experience at the heart of this process will provide valuable insights to the regulators within our global community."
Macorin’s background includes a notable 17-year career with Brazil’s Federal Police, where for a decade he honed his expertise specifically in investigating and preventing banking and financial fraud. This experience has significantly informed his approach to betting regulation, particularly in the areas of anti-money laundering, financial oversight, and collaboration among agencies.
Since the official launch of Brazil’s regulated betting market in 2025, it has garnered attention as a key regulatory initiative within the global gaming sector. Macorin, who previously held the position of undersecretary for monitoring and enforcement at the SPA, has been at the forefront of campaigns aimed at combating illegal operators and fostering partnerships with financial institutions and telecommunications providers.
Expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to serve on the IAGR board, Macorin remarked, "Brazil learned a great deal from the experience of regulators worldwide while developing our own regulatory framework, and I view the IAGR as one of the most important forums for this exchange of knowledge. Although each jurisdiction has its own legal system, market characteristics, and regulatory priorities, many of the challenges we face are increasingly global. Macorin will be attending the IAGR Annual Conference scheduled in Peru from October 19 to 22, where he will engage with regulators and industry representatives to discuss current challenges and opportunities in gaming and betting regulation.
