The Rwanda Development Board (RDB) has suspended Baron Sports Gaming Ltd, which operates under the name Forzza. This decision, announced on Thursday, mandates that Forzza halt all operations within Rwanda immediately and remove any associated promotional materials.
The suspension was enforced after it was determined that Forzza had repeatedly provided casino-style games that were not covered by its licensing agreement. According to the RDB, Forzza’s current license permits only sports betting operations. The board cautioned that further enforcement actions might be taken against Forzza if it continues operations during this suspension period.
In a statement to The New Times, a Rwandan newspaper, Forzza expressed surprise at the suspension, noting that they had not received any explanation from the RDB about this decision.
Rwanda is actively looking to attract international operators. Serge Nyombayire, the COO of the RDB, revealed to iGB last week that, prior to the suspension, there were 15 licensed operators in the Rwandan gambling market, which included a national lottery operator. The suspension of Forzza reduces this number to 14.
Recently, Rwanda updated its licensing framework, granting licenses to three new operators. ForteBet and Super Group's Betway brand obtained licenses for both online sports betting and casino games, while ElephantBet received authorization solely for online sports betting.
Nyombayire emphasized the importance of attracting established operators like Super Group’s Betway as Rwanda continues to develop its emerging market. He remarked that such companies offer valuable experience and are seen as models of good business practices.
Nyombayire stated, "For us, it really showcases that Rwanda is trying its best to really welcome these kinds of companies. Maybe also, these types of companies that have international experience, that have proven their best practices, can also support us in developing the next gambling law… We believe in a sector that is interactive," highlighting the importance of collaboration between regulators and operators to enhance the gambling industry's growth in Rwanda.
