Veikkaus has begun closing its gaming facilities in Kainuu as of January 13, due to the region's increased virus spread, shifting from a low level to an accelerated phase. In contrast, the Central Ostrobothnia area has seen a return to a low level of virus spread, prompting Veikkaus to reopen the Kokkola Gaming Hall today. Kokkola Pelaamo welcomed customers at 10:00 AM, while slot machines resumed operations earlier at 5:00 AM.
As directed by Finland’s Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, Veikkaus is managing closures based on regional conditions. Each hospital district's Covid-19 status is monitored, and if a district transitions to an accelerated or spreading phase, all gaming machines and venues must close by the next working day.
Following the basic level guidelines, venues like Casino Helsinki, Feel Vegas, and Pelaamot can operate normally when conditions improve. Currently, nearly all gaming facilities across Finland are closed. Slot machines, when reopened, will adhere to new identification requirements that came into effect on January 12, insisting players provide proof of identity.
This mandatory ID policy is part of a series of consumer protection initiatives aimed at reducing gambling losses, with estimates suggesting it could lower player losses by up to €300 million. Another significant measure is the temporary reduction of weekly loss limits from €2,000 to €500. Originally set to expire in October after being introduced in April, this restriction has been extended until the end of 2020.
In light of the facility closures, Veikkaus has initiated consultations regarding temporary layoffs for up to 800 employees.
