Gang Sentenced After Violent Assault on Family for Gambling Funds

Three members of a violent gang in South Korea have been sentenced to prison for their involvement in an assault on a family during an attempted robbery at a home in Jincheon, North Chungcheong Province. The Cheongju District Court sentenced the group’s mastermind, a 56-year-old man whose name was not disclosed, to ten years in prison, as reported by News1. Another member of the gang received an eight-year sentence, while the third was sentenced to seven years for crimes including robbery and assault. "The court must deliver severe punishment, as the defendants carefully planned their brutal crime," said Presiding Judge Kang Seong-hun during the sentencing.

The incident occurred on March 9 at approximately 9:46 AM when the gang, armed with telescopic batons and cable ties, broke into the residence of a family of four. They attempted to restrain the victims and assaulted them in a bid to find the passcode for a safe that reportedly contained cash. However, one family member managed to escape through a window and notify authorities, leading to the apprehension of the assailants and the rescue of the family.

During the investigation, it was revealed that the gang acted on tips from accomplices who suggested that the home's owner was storing laundered money from an illegal gambling operation in the safe. Police have arrested two individuals, including a man in his seventies, for allegedly conspiring to assist in the robbery. Prosecutors presented evidence indicating that the gang had conducted reconnaissance on the property on two occasions prior to the attack. Although the judges acknowledged the careful planning of the crime, they opted for shorter sentences based on the lack of severe injuries to the victims, the unsuccessful nature of the crime, and the defendants' cooperation in identifying their accomplices. Illegal online casinos operate in South Korea, and gambling addiction has reportedly risen for a tenth consecutive year, reaching record levels in 2025.
