The Star Sydney may regain its casino license by the end of September, conditional on meeting specific requirements and ongoing regulatory standards. The NSW Independent Casino Commission (NICC) indicates that The Star will conclude its challenges when the term of government-appointed manager Nick Weeks expires, although Weeks is expected to remain engaged in the process.
Since October 2022, the casino's license has been suspended following the Bell Inquiry, which highlighted significant shortcomings in the company's anti-money laundering practices, VIP management, and corporate governance.
To reclaim its license, The Star must adhere to strict regulations and maintain compliance moving forward. Furthermore, another review of its suitability is scheduled by the NICC in the next 12 to 18 months.
Financial and regulatory pressures continue to beset The Star, with a reported loss of AU$307 million for the fiscal year 2026, alongside an ongoing AUSTRAC inquiry that may result in a payment of approximately AU$400 million due to alleged breaches of anti-money laundering laws. Additionally, in August, the casino faced a AU$500,000 penalty linked to incidents involving minors gambling.
Even if The Star regains its license, it will remain under intense scrutiny from regulators. The NICC plans to conduct another assessment of the company’s compliance with Section 31 of the Casino Control Act within 12 to 18 months. Currently, The Star Sydney is grappling with the complexities surrounding its potential return to control of the casino.
