Wildz Group Secures Pioneering Online Gambling License in Finland

Wildz Group has made headlines by securing a license to offer online gambling services in Finland, becoming the first operator to publicly confirm approval as the market prepares to open on July 1, 2027. This significant milestone comes amid a sweeping overhaul of Finland's gambling regulatory framework.

Currently, online gambling in Finland is conducted under a state-owned monopoly. However, a shift towards liberalization means that private operators will be allowed to enter the market in less than four years.

As of September 22, there have been 75 applications submitted since the licensing process opened in March, significantly outpacing initial projections. The expected processing time for these applications is around six months.

Wildz Group, headquartered in Malta, manages several casino brands across various regulated markets. A spokesperson stated they were pleased to be the inaugural recipient of a Finnish online gambling license, emphasizing the achievement as both a significant milestone for the company and recognition of their team's dedication during the application process.

"Being the first operator to receive a gambling licence in Finland is a fantastic milestone for Wildz Group and a well-deserved reward for the hard work and dedication of our entire team throughout the application process. We look forward to working closely with the Finnish regulator to achieve the highest possible level of channelisation, ensuring that the new licensing regime is a success and delivers on its objectives," the spokesperson remarked.

However, the National Police Board, the authority responsible for overseeing the licensing process, has yet to confirm the outcomes for Wildz or any other applications. It remains uncertain when, or if, the board will publish a list of successful licensees.

The application process for a license does not have a cap on the number of operators, but a processing fee of €29,000 ($33,500) is required. Several major operators, along with Finland's current monopoly operator, Veikkaus, have shown interest in entering the market.

Analysts have voiced concerns that if many applications are approved, the Finnish market, which has a relatively small population, could become oversaturated despite the popularity of gambling among residents.

Finland's move towards abolishing its state-owned monopoly aligns with broader trends in Europe, as the country is one of the last to embrace a liberalized market, following Sweden’s full liberalization in 2019.

Board member Lasse Rantala shared on LinkedIn that the license is set to take effect on July 1, 2027, expressing gratitude to his team while confirming that preparations are underway for the anticipated market launch.
