LeBron James Partners with Polymarket, Ad Campaign Takes Off

LeBron James kicked off a significant collaboration with Polymarket over the Labor Day Weekend, marking a crucial move for the prediction market operator as it announced additional initiatives. On Saturday, as Ohio State University launched its college football season, James hinted at his new partnership with the platform via a short video on social media site X. An avid supporter of the Buckeyes, James' post saw him generate speculation about which other athletes might join his endeavor, prompting excitement among fans as Ohio State decisively defeated Miami (Ohio) 56-3.

By Tuesday, those anticipation turned into action when Polymarket released a vibrant advertisement that garnered over 15.5 million views on James’ X page alone. Following the extended Labor Day Weekend, Polymarket shared a 90-second commercial directed by acclaimed filmmaker Peter Berg, known for his work on the series Friday Night Lights. The ad, which featured prominent figures like Eli Manning, Derek Jeter, Richard Sherman, John Leguizamo, and Spike Lee, was strategically timed with the unveiling of "Squads," a new social feature within the Polymarket app that encourages users to engage with the prediction market.

Travis VanderZanden, Polymarket's chief growth officer, articulated the goal of Squads: to create a dedicated space for users to discuss markets, share predictions, and make trades together. "People are constantly debating what’s going to happen next with their friends, and sharing predictions in group chats. With Squads, we’re bringing the conversation and trading together so friends can follow the events they care about and make their predictions in one place," he stated.

The commercial itself drew inspiration from classic humorous Nike ads and included comedic moments meant to resonate with sports fans. For example, the ad showcased Manning catching a pass from a jugs machine while withstanding a tackle from a defender. As James greeted Manning, he joked, "Good morning, Eli," before Manning tossed a football to him outside an elevator marked with the Polymarket logo.

The ad served as a lucrative investment for Polymarket, although the exact cost remains undisclosed. Estimates suggest that the budget likely reached into the millions due to expenses associated with hiring a high-profile filmmaker and various production costs. Last month, Polymarket revealed its ambition of achieving a $21 billion valuation in an ongoing funding round led by Donald Trump Jr.'s venture firm, 1789 Capital.

The advertising push yielded impactful results, with Polymarket soaring to the top of the App Store for free finance app downloads, surpassing competitors like Kalshi and major payment platforms such as PayPal and Venmo.

However, the campaign has drawn criticism from anti-problem gambling advocates. Many athletes involved took to social media to express their excitement about the campaign, with Leguizamo highlighting the thrilling nature of prediction markets. His post echoed from the commercial, stating, "It’s live trading, you gotta stay on your toes." Manning humorously declared he might have to return to playing, which elicited a playful response from Sherman about applying their skills on the field.

The 2026 NFL season poses significant challenges for companies vying for market share in sports betting and predictions, especially following the PASPA ruling. Traditional sportsbooks like DraftKings have started to offer sports-event contracts in the three largest U.S. states: California, Texas, and Florida. Unlike these regulated sportsbooks, prediction markets permit users aged 18 and older to trade on event contracts.

Craig Carton, a sports talk host for WFAN 660 AM in New York, voiced his concerns regarding athletes endorsing Polymarket, labeling the platform as "unregulated" and criticizing its impact on American consumers. He noted that these platforms could lead to severe financial repercussions, posing risks particularly to younger individuals.

A recent Bank of America study highlighted that households engaging with online betting had a median deposit account balance 59% higher than those that do not. This expansion of prediction markets in tandem with conventional sports betting has prompted some observers to question the line between entertainment and investment.

In a timely note, the NFL season commenced shortly after the ad's debut, showcasing a high-stakes rematch between the Seattle Seahawks and the AFC Champion New England Patriots. During their previous meeting, the Seahawks triumphed 29-13, and as of 6 PM ET, Polymarket traders indicated a 62% probability of the Seahawks winning their opener against the Patriots, who had a 39% chance of an upset. While each $100 wager on the Patriots could return $247.35, the broader betting landscape is becoming increasingly competitive.

James' previous multi-year partnership with DraftKings lapsed this past summer, signaling a shift in his marketing efforts as he engages with the evolving landscape of gaming and betting.
