Spain's gambling regulator, the Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ), is advancing regulations aimed at promoting safer gambling. A nationwide deposit monitoring system and a new Player Portal are central to these changes.
This initiative enhances oversight of gambling operators while establishing a cohesive framework for tracking player expenditures. The goal is to increase transparency and put protective measures in place for consumers. However, the plan has faced criticism from licensed operators, many of whom have expressed concerns over ambiguous technical details and the slow implementation process.
Under the new regulations, deposits made by players across various licensed operators will be aggregated and monitored collectively. If a player exceeds their deposit limit, access to gambling accounts will be restricted across all platforms, irrespective of the operator.
DGOJ is currently wrapping up the testing phase of the joint deposit system, and all licensed online gambling operators in Spain must integrate this system prior to the enforcement of Royal Decree 520/2026 on March 25th, 2027. Initial deposit limits are set at €700 per day, €1,750 per week, and €3,300 within four weeks. These limits will be implemented alongside any previous limits set by the individual operators.
Players can adjust or remove their combined deposit limits using a specific form that includes additional information about gambling risks. Any changes will only take effect three working days after submission. For those looking to raise their limits, there's a restriction in place allowing only one limit increase application every three months.
Additionally, the DGOJ has introduced a technical platform capable of real-time deposit processing. The new Player Portal provides consumers with essential information about their deposits and betting activity. Through this portal, users can view their deposits, bets, winnings, losses, and complete transaction histories. They will also receive notifications regarding their spending and gambling activities, set deposit limits, and even download annual reports of their gaming activity for tax purposes.
