Martin Sherif Fined for Betting Breaches

Everton striker Martin Sherif has received a fine of approximately €5,000 after being found in breach of betting regulations over a span of 15 months. However, he will not face any sporting sanctions as a result of this ruling.

The Football Association initially charged Sherif in August, citing that he placed 61 bets on matches from November 2024 to February 2026. An independent regulatory commission, led by Sally Clark and including members Andrew Adie and Tony Agana, determined that the penalty was appropriate and concluded that the nature of the breaches did not warrant further punishment.

At just 20 years old, Sherif admitted to the charges early in the proceedings. The commission revealed that he did not personally place the 61 bets; rather, he facilitated betting for others under his name. This occurred on 42 occasions during the 2024/25 Premier League season while at Everton, and on 19 occasions while on loan at Port Vale and Rotherham United, both teams in EFL League One.

The total amount wagered was approximately €2,270, yielding returns of about €1,769, which resulted in a net loss of around €501.

The commission noted that Sherif cooperated with the FA throughout the investigation and expressed genuine remorse for his actions. Reportedly, he has since engaged with young players from the Everton academy to educate them about the risks associated with gambling. Additionally, he has closed all his gambling accounts to ensure there are none remaining in his name.
