This weekend, Tropical Storm Rachel swept through Southern California and reached the Las Vegas Valley, delivering heavy rainfall and causing flash flooding in certain areas around the Strip.
The National Weather Service in Las Vegas reported that the city measured 1.08 inches of rain from midnight to Sunday morning, setting a record for the highest daily rainfall total for October, a mark that had stood since October 12, 1947.
Interestingly, this substantial rain helped compensate for a remarkably dry year, as the total for this storm was nearly equivalent to the overall precipitation Las Vegas has received all year. Prior to this weekend, the city had accumulated only 1.11 inches of rain in 2023, which is over two inches below the average, according to the NWS.
Flooding caused some road closures near the Strip, particularly around East Flamingo Road, Koval Lane, and Winnick Avenue. Photos and videos shared on social media depicted rising water levels, especially around the LINQ Promenade, where the design of the LINQ garage allows for water to pass through in such conditions, according to the Clark County Regional Flood Control District.
Due to the adverse weather, certain weekend events were canceled, including the last day of the Age of Chivalry Renaissance Festival and a breast cancer awareness walk organized by the Susan G. Komen Foundation along the Strip.
By Monday, road closures had been lifted, but the disruptions may have an impact on visitor numbers and travel statistics.
In August, overall visitation dropped by 4% compared to the same month last year, marking the largest year-over-year decline registered this year by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. Traffic at Harry Reid International Airport decreased by 9% in August, and the airport issued a weather advisory affecting all flights over the weekend into Monday. Currently, air traffic is tracking 7% behind last year's pace, which also saw an overall decline of 7% from 2024.
Preparations for the annual Formula One Las Vegas Grand Prix, scheduled for November 19, are well underway just five weeks before the event. The rain affected some roadways intended for the race circuit, but no delays or issues have been reported by Formula One.
Nevada has recently experienced significant weather events, including wildfires in late August that led to evacuation notices for tens of thousands of residents in the Reno area. In response, local casinos provided discounted rates for evacuees, and numerous businesses contributed to relief efforts.
