OpenBet, a prominent provider of betting and gaming technology, revealed that it processed over 175 million bets and $3 billion in stakes during the record-breaking World Cup. This event ranks as the largest betting occasion in the company’s history, showcasing its reliability during peak activity.
The surge in bets was significantly influenced by England's impressive journey to the semi-finals, with the Norway quarter-final accumulating nearly 5 million pre-match bets, closely followed by 4.65 million on the match against Argentina.
OpenBet's expanded BetBuilder and Player Prop offerings contributed greatly to this growth. For the first time, new markets such as ‘either player to score’ and ‘player to be fouled’ were introduced, leading to 23 million Player Prop bets placed throughout the tournament—a remarkable 130% increase compared to Qatar 2022. The final match featuring Spain and Argentina attracted 831,000 BetBuilder bets, a 39% rise from four years prior.
The tournament underscored a shift in betting behaviors, with ten of the twenty most common bet combinations now including selections for Player Goals or Player Stats, up from four in 2022, which did not feature any player stats. Bets on player statistics surged almost fivefold compared to the last World Cup.
In-play betting also saw a significant increase, reaching around one out of every six bets during the knockout stages, where live wagers had notably higher average stakes than pre-match ones.
In addition to its core offerings, OpenBet supplied Managed Trading Services to clients worldwide, including odds creation, trading content, and risk management throughout the tournament.
The tournament’s scope extended beyond sportsbooks, with OpenBet Locator™ completing over 200 million location checks in regulated US states.
OpenBet demonstrated its status as a key partner for Tier 1 operators, maintaining uninterrupted service from the opening match to the final, scaling capacity to keep pace with demand.
Nikos Konstakis, President at OpenBet, commented, "A World Cup is one of the defining moments for our industry, and this was the largest betting event our platform has ever supported. Beyond the numbers, it’s clear that fan behavior is evolving; they are constructing narratives around individual players rather than just betting on outcomes. Our enhanced BetBuilder and Player Prop options met this demand while providing operators with high-margin products. Managing a sustained peak load over six weeks differs from a single event, and our platform handled it exceptionally well. The highest-profile operators rely on us for significant events, and this was the biggest yet."
