Martin Sherif, a player for Everton FC, is confronting a potential suspension after breaching England's betting regulations. The English Football Association (FA) has disclosed that between November 2024 and February 2026, Sherif placed a total of 61 bets on soccer matches, which is against the rules for players.
At only 20 years old, Sherif has not yet made an appearance for Everton's first team; he joined the youth ranks at the age of 13. Last season, he was loaned out to Rotherham United and Port Vale in the lower leagues.
An FA representative confirmed the details in a statement posted on X, noting that Sherif has until Monday to respond to the allegations.
Sherif is expected to receive a suspension lasting several months due to these violations. In a related case, AFC Wimbledon player Osman Foyo was fined £1,000 ($1,340) and faced a partially suspended five-month ban for placing 252 bets from October 2023 to March 2025, none of which were on his own team's games. Should there be any suspicions of match-fixing connected to Sherif’s bets, the consequences he faces could be significantly more severe, although the FA has indicated that he is not currently under investigation for such matters.
During his loan to Rotherham last season, Sherif projected confidence in his abilities, stating, “Confidence is important as a footballer. Without it, you can't play.” He highlighted his skill set, saying he could score in various ways as long as the ball was delivered correctly, but his loan stint was hampered by injuries, which ultimately led him to Port Vale in February. It is during this time, after making this transition, that the FA claims his betting persisted.
Injuries can heighten the temptation for players to gamble, as former Chelsea and Barcelona striker Eidur Gudjohnsen shared about his own struggles. He noted that boredom during recovery led him to develop a gambling problem, leading to significant debt.
Despite a hardline stance against player betting, the FA faces scrutiny for allowing gambling sponsorships within the sport. This summer, Everton renewed its sponsorship with Stake, an online betting company, despite a voluntary ban on gambling logos on the front of shirts. Stake will instead appear on the club’s sleeve.
When Sherif scored his first goal for the Everton under-21 side in 2023, Stake’s branding was on the shirt. It is shortly after this that Sherif's alleged gambling reportedly began.
Last season, while on loan at Rotherham and Port Vale, Sherif wore shirts that featured SkyBet, an official partner of the English Football League (EFL). Clubs in these lower divisions are still allowed to display gambling brands prominently on their kits. Recently, Birmingham City, partly owned by Tom Brady, secured a deal with betting operator Coral for shirt sponsorship this season.
One observer remarked on social media, questioning the ethical responsibility of clubs: "The FA bans players from betting, but has no problem with clubs taking millions from the same industry. Where’s the duty of care? Young players don’t stand a chance in this system."
