The Arizona Cardinals are facing scrutiny in light of a recent suspension imposed by the NFL on one of their top scouts. Ryan Gold, who serves as the team's director of college scouting, was suspended indefinitely after the league determined he violated its sports betting policy by leaking confidential information regarding the Cardinals' picks in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Mike Caspino, Gold's attorney, strongly refuted the allegations on Sunday, asserting that they are "blatantly false." The NFL has not revealed the identity of the person who allegedly received the information from Gold, and it remains unclear whether that individual placed any bets based on the insider knowledge. "We have demanded an appeal, and we look forward to clearing his good name," Caspino told ESPN.
The Cardinals have been busy restructuring their roster after the release of veteran quarterback Kyler Murray. In the NFL Draft, Arizona selected Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love with their third overall pick and acquired quarterback Carson Beck as a potential successor to Murray. Additionally, the team bolstered its offensive line by selecting Chase Bisontis in the second round and added wide receiver Reggie Virgil in the fifth round.
BetMGM had listed Love at +225 to be chosen third overall just two days prior to the draft, second only to Texas Tech edge rusher David Bailey in likelihood. According to Caspino, Gold had no foreknowledge of the specific draft decisions, stating that only Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill and General Manager Monti Ossenfort were aware of the picks in advance. Love was present at FanaticsFest over the weekend, but did not make any comments regarding the situation.
Regarding the betting claims, Caspino mentioned that Gold's wife made some $10 weekly parlay bets with friends, but insisted that Gold himself did not engage in betting. The NFL maintains strict guidelines prohibiting all personnel from sharing nonpublic information related to gambling. In a statement, the league emphasized its commitment to safeguarding game integrity, asserting that while there is no indication that game integrity was compromised, any violation of the gambling policy is treated with utmost seriousness.
This incident follows comments from NBA Commissioner Adam Silver during the recent NBA Summer League, where he expressed interest in potentially forming a coalition with other leagues to develop best practices focused on sports integrity. This comes amid ongoing concerns about gambling-related scandals across various professional sports, with multiple defendants involved in match-fixing investigations.
In 2023 alone, the NFL issued ten gambling-related suspensions, including a significant one-year ban for former Indianapolis Colts defensive back Isaiah Rodgers, who admitted to placing bets from his locker. Rodgers later joined the Minnesota Vikings following his reinstatement. Other players from franchises including the Detroit Lions, Tennessee Titans, Denver Broncos, and Washington Commanders have also faced suspensions due to gambling violations.
While leagues like the NHL, MLB, and MLS have formed partnerships with prediction markets, the NFL and NBA have not yet established a Memorandum of Understanding with the US Commodities Futures Trading Commission. Recent discussions at a US House Agriculture subcommittee hearing referenced the sports betting scandals affecting multiple leagues.
Gold has been with the Cardinals for 13 seasons and was appointed to his current position in 2025. The team is set to begin training camp on Wednesday.
