As the World Cup fades from memory, Europe’s top football leagues prepare to kick off another exciting season. Simultaneously, the betting industry is poised for intense competition, marking a new chapter for sportsbooks and bettors alike.
A noticeable trend in sports betting is the increasing interest in player-focused wagering, rather than just betting on team outcomes. This shift has paved the way for micro-betting, allowing fans to place bets not just on match results but on specific in-game occurrences, such as individual player actions.
James Derbyshire, sports director for the UK and Ireland at LeoVegas Group, notes the changing landscape of customer engagement in football betting, moving the focus from traditional result predictions to live opinions on game dynamics.
“Historically, football betting concentrated on team outcomes,” Derbyshire explained. “Now, there’s a notable shift towards player outcomes. Bettors want to express how they think the game will unfold, from goals and corners to bookings and shots on target. This change has given customers more flexibility to enjoy the betting experience.”
The drive for better football betting is supported by enhanced data analytics. Derbyshire points to the importance of companies like Genius Sports, which secured exclusive rights to official betting data for 18 leagues through a partnership with the European Leagues Association. Their GeniusIQ technology offers detailed tactical insights and engages fans more deeply with every match.
Genius has implemented advanced computer vision technology in stadiums across Europe, capturing around 10,000 data points for each player multiple times per second. According to James McKiernan, Genius’s commercial director, this data power enables a more seamless betting experience with reduced delays.
“In-play betting often suffers from unwanted delays,” McKiernan noted. “When we can definitively know that the ball is out for a goal kick, operators can accept new bets without keeping customers waiting. Having precise, machine-captured data alleviates issues related to market outcomes like shot totals.”
Chris Gerstle, director of commercial and business development at the European Leagues, emphasizes that reliable official data is essential for maintaining integrity and accuracy, especially as betting options become more granular. "Relationships with data collectors are crucial to ensure data provenance," he stated.
Despite the wealth of new betting markets emerging from data and micro-betting, Derbyshire suggests that LeoVegas has adopted a more tailored approach. “Five years ago, the priority was to have a multitude of betting markets. Now, we want to focus on the markets that resonate most with our customers' interests,” he said.
This strategy emphasizes personalization and automation, ensuring customers receive relevant and timely betting options rather than being overwhelmed with choices that do not align with their interests. Derbyshire explains, “We’re keen on creating markets that reflect how customers perceive the games, like anticipating Arsenal's dominance over Manchester City.”
On the flip side, the rising popularity of player-specific markets brings increased risks related to integrity, as more potential targets for manipulation emerge. Gerstle asserts that trusted partnerships and safeguards are necessary to counteract this, highlighting the commitment to integrity within youth leagues.
Genius maintains a dedicated integrity team to tackle potential issues like spot-fixing, collaborating with leagues to manage concerns in real-time and providing ongoing education and reports post-match.
“A source of truth is needed in official data,” McKiernan remarked. “The data we capture is authorized by the league, providing foundational protection.”
Genius actively monitors betting patterns to identify anomalies and informs leagues of any suspicious activities. The risks associated with negative or unintended outcomes, such as a player failing to reach scoring targets, also require stringent preventive measures.
While the technical capabilities boost the market, they also blur the lines between viewing and betting. Genius's latest product, BetVision, creates an integrated experience where viewers can stream games and place bets alongside tracking statistics in real time.
