The Brazilian Ministry of Finance has mandated an immediate halt to operations at Pixbet, a sports betting enterprise located in Paraíba. As part of this precautionary action, all ongoing bets will be annulled, and any wagered amounts must be refunded to users.
This decision comes amid the launch of Operation Arena on Thursday, which involves the federal police, the Public Prosecutor's office, the Ministry of Finance, and the Federal Revenue Service. The operation is investigating the business group for alleged currency evasion and money laundering linked to sports betting activities.
During the operation, Ernildo Júnior, the owner of Pixbet, was confronted by federal police officers in Campina Grande. Authorities seized his vehicle and phone as they executed a search warrant.
Pixbet’s legal representatives stated that they were unaware of the order initiating the operation and described themselves as being caught off guard. They intend to respond after gaining access to the official decision.
The Ministry of Finance’s precautionary measure cited Pixbet's non-compliance with necessary regulations overseen by the Secretariat of Prizes and Bets (SPA). The company was flagged for inadequate mechanisms to monitor compulsive gambling and for failing to provide essential information required by authorities. Pixbet operates under the domains ‘pix.bet.br,’ ‘ganhei.bet.br,’ and ‘betdasorte.bet.br.’
"The precautionary measure was enacted due to the significant risk posed to bettors and the regulated market," SPA explained in the documentation supporting the suspension of Pixbet.
Consequently, the Ministry has instructed that operations for all associated websites be suspended until the required compliance documentation is submitted and verified by SPA. Importantly, this suspension is separate from Operation Arena, which is also scrutinizing Pixbet for potential money laundering involving cryptocurrencies and offshore companies.
All bets on Pixbet are to be cancelled, and the amounts wagered returned to bettors. The Ministry of Finance has also imposed a daily fine of BRL200,000 for non-compliance with the suspension order, although Pixbet retains the legal right to operate in Rio de Janeiro and Paraná, where it holds local licenses.
Operation Arena specifically targets a network suspected of employing foreign corporate and financial structures to obscure the origins and distribution of money accrued through gambling and sports betting. In this operation, 19 search and seizure warrants were executed across Paraíba, São Paulo, Sergipe, Rio de Janeiro, and Paraná, with authorities also breaking banking and telecommunications secrecy while targeting up to BRL1.1 billion.
The Pixbet headquarters in Campina Grande was searched, along with the home of an individual identified as a "front man" for the organization. Those implicated in the investigation may face charges including currency evasion and money laundering, along with other financial crimes.
