Flutter Entertainment is unifying its UK poker operations under the PokerStars brand in a strategic effort to boost player liquidity and enhance user experience while solidifying PokerStars as the group's premier poker platform. This consolidation commences on August 13, when PokerStars will launch on Betfair, with plans for Sky Bet and Paddy Power to follow later this year. Instead of maintaining distinct poker frameworks across its various brands, Flutter is integrating them into a single network, although each brand's current casino offerings will remain intact.
The initial phase will see PokerStars incorporated into Betfair under the new co-branded identity of PokerStars on Betfair. The existing PokerStars UK platform will continue to operate during this transition, but Flutter aims to gradually migrate customers and the overall product experience to the Betfair Casino ecosystem.
Later, this process will extend to Sky Bet and Paddy Power. When complete, all three brands will contribute to a shared liquidity pool linked to the broader PokerStars Network, which serves as Flutter’s international poker framework. Liquidity is a critical asset in online poker; a larger player base directly results in more active cash games, quicker seat availability, bigger tournament fields, and more enticing prize pools. By merging its fragmented player pools, Flutter intends to strengthen its poker offerings and promote competitiveness.
This consolidation mirrors strategies previously enacted within other Flutter segments, including integrations through FanDuel in the U.S. and Sisal and SNAI in Italy. According to the company, channeling players into a single network maximizes liquidity and enables a more uniform product experience across their portfolio.
Kim Daly, Managing Director of Betfair, referred to the integration as a chance to create a unified gaming proposition by melding two well-established brands. "I’m thrilled to bring two iconic brands under one roof. By integrating PokerStars onto the Betfair platform, we’re uniting two category-transformers that share a passion for innovation and player empowerment," he stated. Daly also emphasized that combining PokerStars with Betfair’s sportsbook and casino offerings would deliver a comprehensive entertainment suite that includes poker, sports betting, and casino gaming.
Since joining Flutter's portfolio with The Stars Group's acquisition in 2020, PokerStars has become a key aspect of Flutter’s strategy, particularly in navigating regulated online gaming markets. Established in 2001, PokerStars is recognized as a leading name in online poker. The changing landscape within the industry, marked by increasing regulatory fragmentation, has created challenges for maintaining large player pools. Mike Woodbridge, Chief Commercial Officer at PokerStars, affirmed the restructuring’s importance: "PokerStars is the most iconic brand in global poker. These changes ensure it remains a core strategic brand within Flutter’s portfolio."
Woodbridge explained that consolidating Flutter’s player base onto one network aims to counteract the trends of divided liquidity, ultimately fostering healthier player pools and enhancing engagement across the board.
The main focus of this transition extends beyond mere rebranding. While it does refresh the branding across Flutter’s UK portfolio, the objective is fundamentally operational. In the world of poker, network size is crucial for player retention and sustained profitability. By amalgamating liquidity instead of preserving multiple isolated player segments, Flutter is positioning PokerStars at the center of its poker ecosystem, simplifying its product lineup and bolstering the network effects vital for competing in the increasingly regulated online poker sector.
