In Brazil's first presidential run-off, Jair Bolsonaro narrowly edged out Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, garnering 47.03% of the vote compared to Lula's 45.16%. The much-anticipated second run-off is scheduled for October 25.
Flávio Bolsonaro, representing the right-wing faction, expressed his satisfaction with the initial results, noting, "I am very happy with the real possibility that, three weeks from now, Brazil will give a definitive answer by choosing a modern government."
Despite polls indicating a favorable position for Lula prior to the elections, Bolsonaro's lead reflects a significant twist. He may benefit further from the endorsement of certain eliminated right-wing candidates as the race progresses to the second round.
Lula finds robust support among impoverished and Catholic voters in poorer regions of Brazil, as he aims for a historic fourth presidential victory, having previously won elections in 2002, 2006, and 2022.
