Chile’s Undersecretariat of Telecommunications, known as Subtel, has declared a ban on 42 foreign online gambling sites for operating without recognition from the nation's regulatory authority. This action follows the directives of both the Supreme Court and the Santiago Appeals Court. Telecommunications providers, including Entel, Movistar, Claro, GTD, WOM, and VTR, are mandated to comply with the law by blocking these sites within 48 hours.
The Superintendency of Casinos (SCJ), which oversees gambling operations in Chile, will identify the specific domains to be banned. Subtel Undersecretary Romina Garrido emphasized the agency's commitment to enforcing the courts' decisions and ensuring digital security for users. She stated, “As Subtel, we are strictly complying with the rulings of the courts and the regulatory framework, deploying an efficient and coordinated technical solution that protects people’s digital security. With this order, we are requiring telecommunications companies to act with the utmost speed to block access to online casino platforms operating outside the law.”
This development is part of ongoing conversations about online gambling regulations within Chile. The enforcement of this order stemmed from a legal action initiated by Lotería de Concepción against companies that failed to adhere to existing regulations. The Supreme Court specifies that illegal gambling activities must be halted without exception, and the Santiago Court of Appeals has confirmed that blocking DNS services is permissible to comply with this requirement.
