The Victoria Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VGCCC) has issued MintBet with a fine of AU$150,000 (PS77,222/EUR90,745/US$97,720) for repeated breaches of responsible gambling rules in the Australian state.

MintBet, a Victoria-licensed company, was found in violation of measures relating to the extended period of gambling a client.

This player gambled online through MintBet for approximately 50 hours. The player lost $31,149 over the course of this period.

In its ruling on this case, VGCCC stated that MintBet continued to accept bets even though the player showed signs of distress relating to gambling problem. All Victoria’s licensees are required to take such action under the Responsible Gambling code of conduct.

According to the VGCCC, MintBet will only close a customer’s account if the player actively indicates that they are experiencing gambling harm.

The regulator stated that MintBet did have some systems to make sure vulnerable people do not lose control of their gambling. However, these were insufficient. It said that this was also a violation of the code.

MintBet is ordered to take action

MintBet has been fined, and is required to notify the VGCCC about the changes it plans to make to its processes and systems. The regulator stated that it would consider the response to determine if further action is necessary.

Scott May, vice-president of the VGCCC, said that “Victoria’s gambling providers must adhere to their codes of responsible gambling conduct.” They exist to protect people against gambling harm.

Even if they accept bets on the internet, service providers should monitor and act when their customers show signs of distress. A prolonged period of gambling is an indicator that could indicate problem gaming.

There are severe consequences for gambling providers who do not adhere to their responsible gambling code. “We won’t accept it.”

Crown keeps Victoria license

This ruling follows the VGCCC’s major decision last week on Crown Resorts in Victoria. Crown Resorts was found to be suitable for a license and can continue operating their Melbourne property.

Crown’s license is in “public interest”, according to VGCCC. Crown Melbourne, the biggest single site employer in Victoria.

This decision was made after the Royal Commission on Casino Licences, which led to major changes in the casino. The Commission condemned what they called “illegal and unethical behaviour”

Crown has spent more than AU$200m in its transformation. The operator says it will keep its license.
