In a significant move against online gambling, Malaysia has eliminated over 457,000 gambling posts and blocked nearly 1,800 illegal gambling websites from January 1 to May 31, 2025. The Communication Ministry of Malaysia reported that the removed posts represented 98% of the 467,772 takedown requests processed following vigilant monitoring by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and actions initiated by law enforcement agencies.
The enforcement of gambling laws is primarily the responsibility of the police, while the MCMC supports these efforts by facilitating investigations and blocking websites, as stipulated by the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and the Online Safety Act 2025.
Additionally, the government responded to Mr. Prabakaran M Parameswaran, highlighting that the MCMC had processed 275,787 requests to remove scam-related content between January 1, 2022, and June 30, 2025. These requests primarily concerned issues of fake identities and impersonation, with 262,293 posts successfully removed—amounting to 95% of the complaints lodged by providers and referrals made according to relevant laws.
The Online Safety Act 2025 specifically noted that five requests to remove financial fraud-related content were submitted from January 1 to June 30 this year, all of which were effectively addressed and removed.
