Malaysia Blocks 1,800 Gambling Websites and 457,000 Posts in 2025

In 2025, Malaysia took significant measures against illegal gambling by removing over 457,000 gambling-related posts and blocking nearly 1,800 websites. The Communication Ministry reported that these actions were carried out from January 1 to May 31, 2025, following 467,772 takedown requests that were primarily generated through the proactive monitoring by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and tips from law enforcement.

The Ministry clarified that while the enforcement of gambling laws is under the jurisdiction of the police, the MCMC plays a vital role in supporting investigations through website blocking, actions that are sanctioned under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and the Online Safety Act 2025.

Additionally, a response was provided to Mr. Prabakaran M Parameswaran, detailing that from January 1, 2022, to June 30 of this year, the MCMC submitted 275,787 requests to remove scam-related content, specifically targeting fake identities and impersonations. The Ministry indicated that this removal effort has been notably effective, with 262,293 posts removed, accounting for 95% of the complaints received from service providers and related legal references.

Furthermore, within the same period, the Online Safety Act 2025 led to the receipt of five removal requests concerning financial fraud-related content, all of which were successfully processed and removed.
