Betfred Fined £900,000 by UKGC for Gambling Harm Failures

Betfred, a UK-based bookmaker, will pay a fine of £900,000 ($1.19 million) imposed by the UK Gambling Commission due to its failures in preventing gambling harm and implementing safer controls. This decision was announced on June 30, following a compliance assessment carried out from May to June 2024. The investigation uncovered significant deficiencies in Betfred's monitoring and intervention systems aimed at protecting users from gambling-related harm.

Specifically, Betfred was found to have breached several provisions of the Social Responsibility Code (SRCP) 3.4.3, which requires the establishment of effective systems to identify, assess, and act on customer risk. John Pierce, the director of enforcement at the Gambling Commission, noted that Betfred lacked adequate procedures for addressing issues, leading to instances where customers exhibiting signs of harm were not contacted promptly. Despite identifying unacceptable gaps, Pierce acknowledged that the licensee acted quickly to implement interim controls and subsequently delivered a suitable action plan, demonstrating a commitment to improving their operational model to meet regulatory standards.

The investigation also highlighted deficiencies in automated processes for detecting harm indicators. Betfred was criticized for not having robust systems in place to track excessive spending, extended gaming sessions, and behavioral patterns tied to gambling issues. A critical procedural error was discovered: once a customer account was marked for review, it could not be flagged again for seven days, resulting in delayed interventions. In one case, a customer reportedly lost £17,900 within 24 hours without any follow-up from the company.

As a result of the Commission's findings, Betfred has agreed to pay the £900,000 fine as a financial penalty for these shortcomings.
