Macau GGR Declines 12.1% in June, Analysts Predict Recovery Post-World Cup

Macau's gaming revenue for June has seen a notable decline, according to the DICJ. The Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) fell by 12.1% compared to the same period last year, totaling MOP$18.5 billion (approximately US$2.29 billion). This drop in revenue is partly attributed to the impact of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as many bettors are expected to focus on football rather than casinos during this time. Despite the downturn in June, total GGR for the first half of the year stands at MOP$15.7 billion, marking a 6.8% increase compared to the same timeframe in 2021. Analysts anticipate a significant decline in total gaming revenue during the World Cup due to its expansion to 48 teams, resulting in 104 matches, which is expected to extend the impact on Macau's casinos compared to previous tournaments. Looking ahead, experts are optimistic that the gambling market in Macau will rebound following the World Cup, aided by a busy entertainment lineup that includes performances by Babymonster, TWS, Enhypen, Taiwanese artist Zhao Chuan, and the NBA China Games featuring a face-off between the Houston Rockets and the Dallas Mavericks.
