LeBron James made headlines this past Labor Day Weekend with his partnership announcement regarding Polymarket, an emerging player in the predictions market sector. His announcement coincided with the college football season's launch, during which Ohio State University dominated Miami (Ohio) with a 56-3 victory. In a post on social media platform X, James, a passionate supporter of the Buckeyes, revealed his collaboration with Polymarket, triggering speculation among fans and industry experts alike about which other athletes might join him.
This speculation was quickly put to rest on Tuesday when Polymarket released a vibrant 90-second commercial advertisement featuring prominent figures such as Eli Manning, Derek Jeter, Richard Sherman, John Leguizamo, and Spike Lee. The ad, directed by Peter Berg, known for his work on Friday Night Lights, was unveiled on James’ X page, where it garnered over 15.5 million views. The timing of the ad's release aligned with the introduction of a new feature called Squads within the Polymarket app, aimed at enhancing user interaction by allowing traders to discuss markets, share predictions, and trade together directly.
Travis VanderZanden, Polymarket’s Chief Growth Officer, commented on the initiative, noting, "People are constantly debating what’s going to happen next with their friends and sharing predictions in group chats. With Squads, we’re bringing the conversation and trading together so friends can follow the events they care about and make their predictions in one place."
The commercial, infused with a comedic tone reminiscent of beloved Nike ads from the 1990s, also features lighthearted moments reflecting the sports culture. For instance, Manning is seen catching a football from a jugs machine and engaging in playful banter with James and Jeter at Polymarket’s headquarters. Notably, last month, the Yankees, with whom Jeter is synonymous, became the first Major League Baseball team to partner directly with Polymarket.
While Polymarket has not disclosed the specific cost of the advertisement, estimates suggest it is likely in the millions, considering the high-profile director's fees and production expenses. Recently, Polymarket announced its ambition for a $21 billion valuation in a funding round led by Donald Trump Jr.'s 1789 Capital.
The campaign appears to have paid off significantly, as Polymarket clinched the top spot in the App Store for downloads among free finance apps, overtaking competitors like Kalshi and established financial apps including Capital One, PayPal, and Venmo.
Some athletes involved in the campaign shared their excitement on social media. Leguizamo encapsulated the swift nature of prediction trading with a post declaring, "It’s live trading, you gotta stay on your toes." Manning humorously suggested he might need to wear pads again, to which Sherman retorted, "now let’s try this on the field."
As the NFL gears up for what could be a pivotal season for sports betting and predictions, traditional sportsbooks like DraftKings are set to launch betting contracts in California, Texas, and Florida, three heavily populated states. Unlike regulated sportsbooks, Polymarket allows participants aged 18 and older to trade on sports-event contracts. This has attracted criticism from advocates against problem gambling, including WFAN 660 AM sports host Craig Carton, who voiced concerns that unregulated gambling is financially harming many Americans. Carton questioned the celebrities backing Polymarket, wondering, “At what point does someone come along where you say no to the offer?”
An analysis by Bank of America, released September 1, indicated that households engaged in online betting had median deposit balances 59% higher than those who abstained. The expanding realm of prediction markets, alongside traditional sports betting, is increasingly drawing parallels between entertainment and investment.
The Polymarket advertisement campaign emerged just before the NFL’s regular season opener, featuring the Seattle Seahawks against the New England Patriots in a rematch of last year's Super Bowl. In their previous encounter, the Seahawks defeated the Patriots 29-13, keeping them scoreless for three quarters. Interestingly, betting odds currently favor the Los Angeles Rams for this year’s Lombardi Trophy, with Polymarket traders granting the Seahawks a 62% chance of winning their opener against the Patriots, who are given a 39% chance. A $100 bet on the Patriots could result in a payout of $247.35 if successful.
LeBron James's previous multi-year partnership with DraftKings ended earlier this summer, raising questions about his next moves in the sports betting industry.
