LeBron James Partners with Polymarket, Ad Campaign Boosts App Store Ranking

LeBron James, known for his enduring passion for football, made headlines over Labor Day Weekend as he joined Polymarket, setting the stage for a broader announcement from the emerging predictions market operator.

On Saturday, coinciding with Ohio State University’s college football season opener, James shared a video on social media platform X, revealing his new partnership with Polymarket, a platform that has drawn mixed reactions. While fans watched Ohio State dominate Miami (Ohio) with a score of 56-3, industry insiders speculated on other potential celebrity endorsements joining James’ campaign.

By the following Tuesday, Polymarket unveiled a lively advertisement that garnered over 15.5 million views on James’ X page. This ad campaign debuted after Polymarket’s three-day Labor Day Weekend hiatus, featuring a colorful 90-second spot directed by Peter Berg, known for his work on the acclaimed series Friday Night Lights. The advertisement introduced Squads, a new social feature within the US Polymarket app, allowing users to share market insights and trading strategies directly.

Travis VanderZanden, Polymarket's chief growth officer, explained the initiative’s purpose: "People are constantly debating what’s going to happen next with their friends and sharing predictions in group chats. With Squads, we’re integrating conversation and trading, so friends can follow the events they care about in one place."

The ad, designed with a comedic flair reminiscent of nostalgic Nike commercials from the '90s and a humorous NFL Super Bowl spot, features several celebrities including Eli Manning, Derek Jeter, Richard Sherman, John Leguizamo, and Spike Lee. Within Polymarket's headquarters, the ad showcases Manning leaping to catch a pass while enduring a mock tackle. James and Manning share a moment before James exchanges greetings with Jeter, reinforcing the partnership, especially after the New York Yankees became the first MLB team to collaborate with Polymarket last month.

While Polymarket has not disclosed the ad's financial details, analysts speculate the cost was multimillion-dollar, considering expenses associated with a filmmaker like Berg, as well as production elements such as set design and post-production work. In late August, Polymarket revealed a target valuation of $21 billion in a funding round led by Donald Trump Jr.’s 1789 Capital.

The investment seems justified, as Polymarket surged to the top of the App Store for free finance app downloads, outpacing competitors like Kalshi, Capital One Mobile, PayPal, and Venmo.

However, the campaign drew criticism from advocates against problematic gambling. Athletes engaged on social media, with Leguizamo highlighting the dynamic nature of prediction markets in his posts, while Manning humorously noted the possibility of returning to his pads. Sherman’s response suggested the idea of testing the app on the field. The NFL season opener on the horizon has sparked competitive interest among various sportsbooks eager to attract bettors, especially after the repeal of PASPA brought traditional betting into the limelight.

Unlike regulated sportsbooks, Polymarket allows individuals aged 18-21 to trade on sports-event contracts, sparking debate among experts. Craig Carton, a sports talk radio host, criticized the celebrities for endorsing Polymarket, arguing that such markets could potentially lead to greater financial harm for individuals, particularly younger audiences. He questioned the moment at which athletes might turn down a marketing opportunity that could contribute to societal issues.

A Bank of America study, released on September 1, revealed that households engaging in online betting typically held deposit account balances 59% higher than those who did not partake in such gambling, raising alarms that the line between entertainment and investment is increasingly blurred.

As the NFL season kicks off, the debate regarding state regulations versus federal oversight in sports trading continues without clear boundaries. In a significant move, a deputy general counsel from the CFTC has posted a job listing aimed at developing comprehensive rules regarding event contracts, expressing the importance of this regulatory framework.

The Polymarket ad launched right before the NFL’s regular-season opener, which features a rematch of last season’s Super Bowl: the Seattle Seahawks are set to host the AFC Champion New England Patriots. Last February, the Seahawks achieved a notable victory against the Patriots. As of 6 p.m. ET, Polymarket traders placed the Seahawks at a 62% probability to win the upcoming match, while the Patriots have a 39% chance of winning, offering significant odds for those betting on the outcome.

LeBron James’ prior partnership with DraftKings concluded earlier this summer, according to Yahoo Finance.
