Spain Implements Nationwide Deposit Limits for Online Gambling

Spain's gambling authority, the Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ), is implementing a new nationwide deposit monitoring system alongside a Player Portal aimed at enhancing safe gambling. These measures are designed to enhance oversight of both operators and individual player activities, establishing a unified framework for tracking expenditures. This initiative seeks to promote transparency and introduce protective measures for consumers. However, licensed operators have expressed concerns over the unclear technical implementation processes and the slow pace of these changes.

Under the new deposit limit regulations, all deposits made by players with various licensed gambling operators will be aggregated, automated, and monitored collectively. If a player's total deposits exceed the set limit, they will face blocks on their accounts, regardless of which operator they are using.

The DGOJ is currently finalizing the testing phase for this joint deposit system, which all licensed online gambling operators in Spain must integrate by the enforcement of Royal Decree 520/2026, set for March 25, 2027. The default deposit limits are established at €700 per day, €1,750 per week, and €3,300 over a four-week period, in addition to any operator-specific limits that may already be in place.

Players have the option to modify or remove their collective deposit limits through a specialized process that includes information on gambling risks. Any changes to limits will take effect only after three working days, and players can request an increase in their limits no more than once every three months.

In addition, the DGOJ has developed a technical platform capable of processing deposits in real-time. This accompanies the launch of the new Player Portal, which offers consumers essential information on their deposits and betting activities. Users of the portal can monitor their deposits, stakes, winnings, and losses, as well as access their complete operation history and statistics. The portal also allows users to receive alerts regarding their spending, set their deposit limits, and download annual reports on their gaming activity for tax purposes.
