The NBA has directed its authorized sportsbook partners to restrict specific bets and limit player prop parlays for the current season, a decision stemming from gambling-related incidents involving players Jontay Porter and Terry Rozier.
A memo circulated to sportsbook partners, including DraftKings and FanDuel, outlined the types of bets no longer permitted. Notably, parlays that combine an individual player's under statistics have been banned. Additional restrictions have been placed on bets regarding players winning the opening tip, failing to miss a shot, and betting on players expected to play fewer than 12 minutes.
Moreover, certain high-payout bets are also restricted. NBA Executive Vice President Scott Kaufman-Ross remarked on the difficulties surrounding betting in this context, emphasizing the necessity to prevent illegal gambling activities.
This decision follows actions by the involved players, which were not directly related to gambling. Reports included allegations that Porter appeared to intentionally leave games early, while Rozier faces multiple charges connected to attempts at placing bets but asserts his innocence.
Looking ahead, the NBA is considering further measures to enhance integrity as it prepares for the 2026-27 season. The league is also facing challenges in enforcing these restrictions across prediction markets, where it lacks formal partnerships. Despite this, both DraftKings and FanDuel have indicated their support for the NBA's efforts to uphold game integrity and ensure a regulated betting environment.
