The NBA has mandated its authorized sportsbook partners to eliminate certain betting options and restrict player prop parlays for the upcoming season, responding to recent gambling-related incidents involving players Jontay Porter and Terry Rozier.
A memo distributed to sportsbook partners, which include major operators like DraftKings and FanDuel, outlines the prohibited bets. Notably, wagers that involve combining a single player's under statistics in parlays are no longer allowed. Additionally, there are restrictions on bets concerning players winning the opening tip, specific shooting outcomes, and those likely to play under 12 minutes.
Higher payout bets have also faced limitations. NBA executive vice president Scott Kaufman-Ross acknowledged the issues surrounding betting in this context, emphasizing a commitment to preventing illegal gambling.
This decision follows actions by players that, while not directly related to gambling, raised concerns. Reports suggest Porter may have intentionally exited games early, while Rozier faces multiple charges related to attempts at betting, although he denies any misconduct.
Looking ahead, the NBA plans to expand its integrity measures in the 2026-27 season. The league also recognizes the difficulties in enforcing these restrictions within prediction markets, where it lacks formal partnerships. Nonetheless, DraftKings and FanDuel have voiced their support for collaborating with the NBA to uphold game integrity and ensure a regulated betting environment.
