Polymarket Partners with ATP Tour for Streaming and Prediction Markets

Polymarket, a notable name in the prediction markets space, has launched an exclusive partnership with the ATP Tour, the governing body for men’s tennis. This collaboration allows Polymarket's users in the U.S. to stream and trade contracts for the entire ATP calendar, including significant events like Indian Wells, the Miami Open, the Cincinnati Open, and the Nitto ATP Finals.

Ari Borod, head of Sports Business Development at Polymarket, highlighted the intuitive nature of tennis for prediction markets. He remarked, "Tennis is a natural fit for prediction markets, with momentum shifting point by point and every match creating opportunities for expectations to change in real-time."

This deal marks a significant milestone for Polymarket, yet it does not encompass the most prestigious tennis tournaments. Major Grand Slam events—Wimbledon, the Australian Open, the French Open, and the US Open—are under the jurisdiction of other organizations. Additionally, no women's tournaments are included, as those events fall under the Women’s Tennis Association.

Despite this limitation, Polymarket indicated that the partnership includes approximately 20,000 matches per season, which covers main draw matches, qualifying rounds, and doubles events. Notably, the ATP Challenger Tour, a secondary tier for players pursuing entry into the main tour, is also part of the agreement. This deal is facilitated through the ATP’s media division, Tennis Data Innovations (TDI), responsible for data compilation and streaming rights.

David Lampitt, CEO of TDI, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, "The way people follow and engage with sports continues to evolve, and we want tennis to be at the forefront of that change. Polymarket has emerged as a leader in its category, and we’re excited to welcome them."

Polymarket views this deal as an expansion of its growing portfolio in sports. The company aims to explore innovative methods of integrating prediction markets into how fans engage with live events.

In the backdrop of this development, speculation around the implications of prediction markets persists. Last month, Kalshi faced scrutiny for settling a market regarding whether actor Brad Pitt would attend the World Cup Final on July 19, even without photographic evidence.

Different sports organizations are currently split on their views regarding prediction markets. While Polymarket has secured exclusive partnerships with Major League Baseball and Major League Soccer this year, its competitor Kalshi has a similar arrangement with the National Hockey League.

However, significant leagues such as the NFL and NBA are advocating for more stringent regulation of prediction markets. They have contacted the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), asserting that sports contracts should not allow wagers related to specific players' actions, citing potential for manipulation and predictability.

In a concerning development, senators from Oregon have urged the CFTC to limit prediction markets that allow betting on incidents like wildfires, fearing it might incentivize individuals to start fires to win bets.

Legal experts have cautioned that prediction market operators should consider diversifying their offerings beyond sports to avoid looming regulatory complications. Nevertheless, prediction markets related to sports remain a lucrative sector. Despite challenges faced by the crypto exchange Coinbase in the second quarter, its new prediction market service reported a remarkable 106% growth quarter-on-quarter, largely driven by sports-related contract trading. In its latest quarterly update, Coinbase confirmed that sports were its leading category for prediction markets, thanks in part to significant events like the NBA Playoffs and the World Cup, contributing to this growth.
