BetGoodwin, a UK-based bookmaker, is exploring the possibility of an initial public offering (IPO) that could see it listed on London's Alternative Investment Market (AIM) with an estimated value of around £80 million. This move comes as large gambling firms face declining stock prices amid rising tax pressures and regulatory uncertainties. To assist in this endeavor, BetGoodwin has enlisted the services of Allenby Capital, an investment bank that will help guide the company through the flotation process.
Currently, approximately 20% of BetGoodwin's shares are held by its founders—CEO Julian Head and COO Ben Head—and they are considering selling these shares as part of the IPO.
The financial status of Goodwin Racing has also shown improvement, with cash reserves rising to £6.08 million in 2024, reflecting a notable increase compared to previous periods.
If the anticipated valuation of £80 million is realized, it would highlight a potential appetite from investors for smaller gambling firms aiming to enter public markets, especially in contrast to the current struggles faced by more prominent operators under financial strain.
This potential IPO takes place against a backdrop of changing dynamics in the gambling sector, with recent forecasts being adversely impacted by anticipated tax increases. The Remote Gambling Duty, for example, is set to rise from 21% to 40% by April 2026, while the General Betting Duty is expected to increase from 15% to 25% in April 2027. These upcoming tax hikes add to the concerns already present in the industry, especially regarding the ongoing discussions about changes to the Machine Games Duty.
The higher taxes threaten to squeeze the profit margins of gambling operators, which could affect investor sentiment toward valuations in the UK gambling sector. Despite the positive news surrounding Allenby Capital's appointment and the potential £80 million valuation, any decision regarding BetGoodwin's flotation remains unconfirmed for now.
