The Evolution of Football Betting for the New Season

As football fans eagerly anticipate the return of top leagues this weekend, the betting industry is also preparing for a competitive new season. Following the World Cup, significant changes are occurring in sports betting, with bettors increasingly interested in wagering on individual players rather than just team outcomes.

Micro-betting has emerged as a popular option, enabling bettors to place wagers on various aspects of a match, such as goals and shots on target, rather than solely the final outcome. James Derbyshire, sports director for the UK and Ireland at LeoVegas Group, points out that this shift signifies a fundamental change in how customers engage with football betting, moving from simply predicting results to providing opinions on how matches will progress.

"For the past 20 to 30 years, the emphasis has been on team outcomes. Now, the market is shifting towards player-focused outcomes," Derbyshire states. "Customers want to express their views on how a game unfolds, and this trend has created greater flexibility in how they enjoy betting on football."

The role of data in football betting is increasingly pivotal, especially as bettors show a growing interest in narrative-driven betting through player props. Genius Sports has positioned itself at the forefront of this movement, having secured exclusive rights to official betting data for 18 leagues through a landmark agreement with the European Leagues Association last year.

Genius's GeniusIQ system enhances tactical analysis and fan engagement by utilizing advanced AI technology to track extensive data points in real-time across European stadiums. James McKiernan, Genius’s Commercial Director, notes the system's ability to collect data from 200 frames per second, allowing better insights into player and ball positioning during a match.

"Currently, in-play betting has delays. However, if we know the ball is out for a goal kick, we can reduce the delay time, providing a better experience for bettors who want to engage without waiting," he explains.

Chris Gerstle, director of commercial and business development at European Leagues, emphasizes the significance of official data in ensuring accuracy and integrity as betting products evolve into more granular markets. "Strong relationships with companies that gather official data are crucial in maintaining data integrity," he states. He highlights the importance of official licensed data partnerships, particularly as micro-betting grows more prevalent.

While data accessibility has expanded the number of markets available for bettors, Derbyshire mentions that LeoVegas has shifted from a focus on quantity to relevance. "In the past, we emphasized the number of markets on our platform. Now, we prioritize which markets resonate with the stories customers wish to explore in football." This approach includes a shift towards personalizing offers and ensuring customers receive the most pertinent betting options.

Concerns regarding integrity accompany the rise of player-specific betting markets, as each additional market presents new risks. Gerstle insists that leagues must collaborate with trustworthy partners to uphold the integrity of the game. Genius now has a dedicated integrity team focusing on identifying spot-fixing. They work collaboratively with leagues to manage potential issues and educate stakeholders on maintaining integrity.

Operational guidelines aim to limit betting on negative outcomes, such as a player scoring below a certain threshold.

McKiernan explains that they monitor betting patterns and league feedback to control which markets to restrict for integrity's sake. "If anything seems off, we report it to the league for potential action because preserving integrity is vital for the sports ecosystem."

As the gambling landscape evolves, technology plays a crucial role in enhancing the betting experience. Genius has developed BetVision, an interactive platform that allows bettors to watch games and place bets within the same interface while tracking stats. McKiernan sees this fusion of viewing and betting as a game changer for the industry.

"Streaming has existed for years, but we aim to determine whether these streams engage fans or merely serve as auxiliary options. We've noted that viewers often bet while streaming games, blurring the lines between watching and wagering, creating a more engaging and seamless experience."

LeoVegas is also focusing on bet builders, catering to customers who want to combine various outcomes into a single wager. Derbyshire highlights the importance of making these markets easy to find and flexible for bettors. "We need to ensure that customers can combine their bets in a way that enhances their experience while watching games. This adaptability is essential as we head into the new season."

As excitement mounts for the new football season, the future of betting will be dictated by how operators utilize data and technology to create more immersive experiences for fans.
