BetGoodwin, a UK-based bookmaker, is considering pursuing an initial public offering (IPO) on London’s Alternative Investment Market (AIM), potentially valuing the firm at £80 million. This decision comes at a time when many gambling companies are grappling with declining stock prices, increased tax burdens, and regulatory uncertainties.
To assist with the potential flotation, BetGoodwin has engaged Allenby Capital, an investment bank. Reports indicate that approximately 20% of the company's shares, currently owned by CEO Julian Head and COO Ben Head, could be available for sale.
Financially, Goodwin Racing has shown improvement, reaching cash reserves of £6.08 million in 2024, a notable rise from earlier figures.
If BetGoodwin's valuation of £80 million is realized, it would highlight investor interest in smaller gambling enterprises seeking to enter public markets, even as larger companies face challenges from market fluctuations and regulatory changes.
The planned IPO arrives against a backdrop of disappointing performance among larger gambling firms in London. The industry's outlook is being affected by several upcoming tax increases. The Remote Gambling Duty is set to rise from 21% to 40% in April 2026, while the General Betting Duty is expected to escalate from 15% to 25% in April 2027. Further changes to the Machine Games Duty are also rumored, heightening concerns among operators.
These increased tax obligations may further strain operators' profit margins and influence investor perceptions of gambling company valuations, particularly for those operating in the UK.
Despite the announcement regarding Allenby Capital's appointment and the prospective valuation, the flotation of BetGoodwin has not yet been confirmed.
