Stefy Bau has always had a passion for motorsport, nurtured since childhood in Italy. Hours spent dreaming of competing on prestigious stages fueled her drive, leading to a successful career that included three world championships, two WMX titles, and seven Italian championships. However, when an injury ended her racing career in 2005, she viewed it as an opportunity—a chance to apply her experience toward fostering new pathways for women in motorsport, a field notoriously dominated by men.
Since then, Bau has dedicated herself to creating opportunities for women in this industry, collaborating with organizations and companies to support young women facing its challenges. Through speeches, global events, and hands-on strategies, her mission centers on paving the way for future generations.
The idea for Init Esports was sparked in 2019 when Bau witnessed her niece’s enthusiasm for video gaming during a visit to Italy. Intrigued by the possibility of merging gaming with motorsport, she embarked on a journey to explore this intersection.
Bau identified a burgeoning esports industry that lacked representation for female sim racers, leading to the establishment of Init Esports. In just four years, the organization has gained prominence in esports and sim racing, organizing dynamic events, showcasing talented women racers, and cultivating a community committed to inclusion and excellence.
Recognizing that over half of gamers worldwide are female, Init Esports addresses an overlooked market. These female gamers—talented and ambitious—are now empowered through the organization, which aims to equip them with the necessary tools and support to excel.
Init Esports has created a welcoming environment in which women can thrive in racing. One notable initiative is the Sim 4 STEM program, designed to engage young girls in motorsports through STEM activities. This program provides hands-on experiences for K-12 and college-level girls, allowing them to tackle real-world problems using technology while developing critical thinking and teamwork skills in a supportive setting. Research indicates that gamers often excel in STEM fields, and this program helps illuminate potential pathways for girls.
Another initiative, the Screen to Speed program, offers female drivers a safe and exhilarating virtual sim-racing experience that simulates real track racing. The excitement generated is palpable, and as this program evolves, it continues to build a passionate community of racers.
The core of Init Esports lies in its community. From the outset, the organization has fostered a collaborative space where individuals come together to support one another, growing and celebrating their shared enthusiasm for racing. This community dynamic not only enhances confidence but also drives success—encouraging women to take bold strides in their careers, both in the gaming arena and beyond.
Looking ahead, Bau sees immense potential in the esports and motorsports arenas, particularly for women. Her message to those interested in entering this space is straightforward: embrace the challenge. She emphasizes the importance of self-education, trusting one’s instincts, and diving in with determination. While there are no shortcuts, those who remain dedicated to their passions will find significant rewards.
Throughout her career, Bau has consistently broken barriers and demonstrated that the impossible can become possible. Her mission continues to be focused on creating opportunities for the next generation of women, striving to ensure that they can pursue their dreams through Init Esports every day.
