BetDEX is positioning itself as a pioneering platform that combines cryptocurrency with sports betting, claiming to be the world's first decentralized sports betting exchange. The company's goal is to create a global sports betting protocol that allows users to trade bets quickly and efficiently, with low costs and no counterparty risk.

Founder Nigel Eccles expressed his enthusiasm for launching a new venture, BetDEX Labs Inc., with former FanDuel colleagues Varun Sudhakar and Stuart Tonner. He stated, "Starting a company means getting to pick who you get to hang out with for the next 5-10 years. Because of that I’m really excited today to share… It is going to be one incredible journey." Along with Sudhakar and Tonner, the team includes Andy Murray, Pawel Witek, Drew Alexander Baird Spencer, and Ewan Meldrum.

Eccles previously served as the CEO of FanDuel until 2017, when Matt King took over the role. Following Paddy Power Betfair's acquisition of FanDuel, which led to the formation of Flutter, Eccles initiated legal action over the $465 million (£367 million/€411 million) valuation at the time. He argued that this figure overlooked the future benefits of legalized sports betting for the company. Notably, a transaction in December 2020, where Flutter acquired an additional 37.2% stake, suggested FanDuel's valuation had risen to over $11 billion.
