During the ongoing 2026 World Cup, some of the most heartwarming stories have surfaced, although many are often overshadowed by events on the field. One such story features 21-year-old Jacob Allmendinger, who invested his life savings of £10,000 for a once-in-a-lifetime trip to the World Cup with his 80-year-old grandfather, Geoff Golliker. The pair journeyed from England to the USA and Mexico to cheer on the Three Lions, witnessing victories over Panama, DR Congo, and Mexico.

Their thrilling 3-2 win against Mexico at the iconic Azteca Stadium secured England a place in the quarterfinals, where they are set to clash with Norway on Saturday in Miami. Jacob and Geoff plan to be present at Hard Rock Stadium once more.

Jacob expressed no regrets about his decision, stating, "The choice was between this or a house deposit, and I don’t regret choosing it at all. You can make the money back, but memories are forever."

In an unexpected twist to their trip, the US-based online crypto casino, Metawin, reached out to Jacob after hearing about his story. They promised to refund his £10,000 if England could defeat Panama by more than two goals. Although England's initial 2-0 win did not meet that condition, Metawin later reiterated their offer for a reimbursement if England won against DR Congo, which they did at 2-1.

"I was amazed, it was an incredible gesture really," Jacob recounted. "They had contacted me on social media about the story and tweeted about paying the money back if we beat Panama by more than two goals. When we only won 2-0 they said they would still pay £10,000 if we won against DR Congo by any score. I didn’t quite believe it, to be honest, until I looked at my bank and it was there."

Hailing from North Ferriby, East Yorkshire, Jacob was introduced to the football world by Geoff, who began taking him to watch Hull City matches in his childhood. Their bond through football has remained strong, with both continuing to attend home and away games, including Hull City’s recent promotion to the Premier League.

Jacob reflected, "Ever since grandma died, football’s been a massive part of our lives really." Geoff added, "Certainly, it really has been my saviour; she’d have absolutely loved this trip."

Their story has captured public attention after going viral, with Jacob receiving numerous supportive messages on social media. He remarked, "I think it just resonates with people. I’ve had people reach out who have lost their grandparents and wish they’d done something similar. It just makes us cherish this time more."
