Ireland is moving forward with plans to enhance its anti-money laundering (AML) regulations specifically targeting the gambling industry. The new measures will introduce stricter oversight for gambling operators and heightened scrutiny of transactions involving cryptocurrency. This initiative is part of a larger framework set to be revealed by Finance Minister Simon Harris as part of the Government's National Strategy on Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism.
Under the new strategy, gambling operators, including casino clubs that offer machine-based gambling, will operate under a more stringent regulatory framework. The government plans to enforce tighter licensing conditions and bolster the enforcement of anti-money laundering regulations. These changes aim to strengthen existing safeguards and reduce opportunities for criminal organizations to launder money through the gambling sector or take advantage of regulatory loopholes.
In addition to the updates for traditional gambling operations, the strategy will also implement new requirements for operators that handle cryptocurrency transactions. These businesses will be mandated to conduct enhanced due diligence to confirm the legitimacy of cryptocurrency-linked transactions. Furthermore, they will need to establish the source of customer funds prior to acceptance, addressing growing concerns about the misuse of digital assets for money laundering and financing terrorism. The Government's new measures indicate a clear intent to elevate standards of transparency, customer identification, and risk-based compliance within Ireland's regulated gambling industry.
