Castelli Municipality Bans Online Gambling Access on Public Networks

The Municipality of Castelli in Buenos Aires province has become the first and only local government in Argentina to prohibit access to online gambling websites through its public internet connections. Mayor Francisco Echarren announced this new law, which forbids access from all official connections, including those in schools, government offices, and free Wi-Fi spots. Additionally, the municipality will implement information campaigns aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of gambling for children.

"While Milei reduces funding for prevention and supports the development of the online gambling industry, in Castelli, we draw a line. Four out of ten young people have already placed bets using their mobile phones. They start gambling at the age of 13. While some people ignore the issue, we take action," Mayor Echarren stated.

To ensure the effectiveness of these restrictions, Castelli will work with local internet provider Cooperativa CUECCA to block access to gambling websites. The municipality also plans to contact educational organizations to adopt precautions and educational initiatives. These decisions come amid a national discussion regarding youth gambling, and Mayor Echarren has expressed a commitment to protecting young people, noting the concerning trend of children starting to gamble at a very young age.
